HAEWAI LOCAL FOOD FESTIVAL – dinner to fund our food forest

Sat 2 Mar 2024 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Houghton Valley Community Hall, 80 Houghton Bay Road, Houghton Bay

We can’t wait to share beautiful kai from our ngāhere and local mārakai with you! Come and join a local food celebration in our Community Hall and finish off Local Food Week in style. It will be an evening meal, but early enough if you would like to bring your children. The meal will include locally grown and foraged ingredients as well as some from not far away. We have another wonderful meal lined up, created by Leone and our Seeds-to-Feeds team, including:

  • Foraged salad, bread, preserves, dips;

  • Panzanella, vegetable tarts, roast vegetables;

  • Fruit and vegetable-based cakes and desserts;

  • Drinks from the wild South Coast.

All food will be vegetarian with vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options. Please sign up soon so that we have a good idea of the numbers leading up to the event. You also have the option of buying a meal for someone in the community.  Bookings are koha-based, we recommend $20 for an adult and $10 for a child over ten to cover the meal. Children under ten are free and aren't included in the ticketing numbers as they probably won't sit down for very long! Any extra you give will cover the meal for someone else. Whichever way we would love to have you join us, if you would like to donate some time, or help out with the event rather than give monetary koha, please let us know.  Be sure, you will get a fabulous meal and can spend an evening with friendly people! Funds raised will go towards a local food forest (with some of it for our fantastic Seeds-to-Feeds organisers), and will be held in trust by the Houghton Valley Progressive Association.

ĀHUAREKA O TE IHU O HINERAUMATI | Celebrating the summer solstice

Nau mai haere mai ki tētahi
Āhuareka o te Ihu o Hineraumati

We invite you to a
Summer Solstice Celebration

Join us for a day of community, kai, activities, farm tours, music and much more at Kaicycle Urban Farm, Saturday the 16th of December from 10 am to 2 pm.

We will start the day with a crop swap at 10am hosted by the amazing Crop Swap Te Whanganui-a-Tara and Wellington Timebank crew.

Crop Swap brings together a community of backyard gardeners, home bakers and food foragers for swapping and sharing high-quality local food. Feel free to bring anything you have extra or abundance of, and take home from what others bring to the table.

At 12pm everyone is invited to participate in a solstice ritual.
This is a time to make wishes for the next year, acknowledge the changing of the seasons and share our gratitude to Papatūānuku.

Then we come together at 12.30pm for a large shared potluck kai.
We invite those who wish to contribute by bringing a plate of food that represents celebration, it could be a traditional dish shared at gatherings, a recipe that has been passed down through your family, or simply your favourite kai to share with others. Seeds to Feeds will be providing some substantial items for the table so something small and easily shared is perfect.

After kai, at 1.30pm there will be farm tours of the Kaicycle Urban farm.

Other activities will take place throughout the day including, preparing seed packets to be shared around for Neighbours Aotearoa, live music and with time to connect with others. The whole whānau is invited and you are welcome to spend part of, or the whole day with us.

This event is brought to you by a collection of organisations that work hard throughout our rohe to celebrate, share, grow and champion our local kai, and our communities.

If you are interested in volunteering for the event please reach out to Rose Dohig email community@kaicycle.org.nz

Alongside a delicious dinner, we will be launching our Short Story Competition with a sharing of a collaborative story that grew from the community. Hopefully, this will inspire you to get writing and enter with something of your own.

Dinner will be served at approximately 6.30 pm. Dinner cost is by donation. All money raised will go back into creating vibrant events for our community.

KARORI Seed, seedling swap with Wgtn Libraries

Join us for a seed and seedling swap in the Karori Library, run in partnership with Kaicycle Urban Farm!

Seed and seedling swaps are an awesome opportunity for gardeners of all skill levels to collaborate and share what they might have an abundance of.
It's a great way to save money on buying new seedlings, an opportunity to learn from others, and can lead to new varietals in your māra.

Why not raise some extra seedlings? knowing you have a space to come to, to swap them, and maybe even gift them to a community garden.

Seed or seedling-less, join us for a chat. We would love to see you!
