What is this all about

Seeds to Feeds aims to harness the power of local food experiences to connect people - to each other, themselves, and their place.

The Seeds to Feeds coordination team support community groups of local food enthusiasts, cooks, hosts and growers to:

  • Develop their vision for local food in their place

  • Grow, forage and preserve local food

  • Run food-related events throughout spring/summer using local knowledge such as educational workshops, practical classes and working bees

  • Cook and host delicious community-based meal for the ‘Harvest Celebration’ festival in March, where local food is the star of the show.

Through collective, supported action, communities become more resilient thanks to the nourishing practices of learning about, preparing and sharing local food.

Seeds to Feeds aims to provide a safe environment where people can develop new skills, build their confidence, and gain a sense of achievement with their community, creating strong bonds and a greater sense of whanau and belonging.

Our intention is for everyone involved to be inspired to participate more in local food.

Why is this happening

Because food brings people together.

Food has always been at the heart of our communities and cultures. But over the last century we’ve shifted away from vibrant local food economies to distant industrial food production. During the same period, our economic system has fractured our communities by making it hard for friends and family to live in the same village. Seeds to Feeds is all about exploring the role of local food in building strong, connected communities. Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of our two main aims:

  1. So people experience a stronger sense of belonging to their place, to their communities and to themselves. Connecting people around local food is an ancient, tried and tested way to lift and sustain our wellbeing - emotionally, mentally and physically.

  2. So people grow, process and preserve more food within their local communities. Strong local food economies increase everyone’s day-to-day access to fresh, nutritious food and improve the amount of food available locally in disaster situations.

 HOW DOES IT WORK

 A taste of the ACTION

Te kai a te tangata kē, hē kai tītongi kaki. Te kai a tona ringa tino kii, tino mākona
Food from elsewhere only tickles the throat, but gathered by your own hand will fill you with contentment
